Healthy Choices Thanksgiving Challenge Day 5
Well Today is the last day of the Healthy Choices Thanksgiving Challenge. Friday after Thanksgiving is always a big leftovers day for our family. We basically just eat off all the left overs, and this is where my choice yesterday to not cook as much broccoli casserole was a good thing. Cuz this is the day I usually eat a lot of it.
But…my 10 yo son helped me out with that. By the time I made it downstairs to eat, he had polished off all but about a tablespoon of the casserole. So, that was a choice I didn’t have to make.
Exercise wise, I was sore from yesterday’s mini-workouts and all that standing, so I did a lot of stretching today and worked in several mini-workouts (Fat Loss Quickie style).
Food wise, again I tracked not only what I ate, but when I ate it, still trying to get a grip on when I’m eating the bulk of my calories/nutrition.
11:30 am Banana
1 pm Thanksgiving leftovers – 1/2 sweet potato, mashed potatoes, a tablespoon of broccoli cheese casserole, and turkey, all with some leftover gravy.
8 pm – 9:30 pm Munched on a bowl of strawberries with sugar. this was basically a pound of strawberries, minus 3 that I gave to my kids.
(I bought this as my treat, instead of the dark chocolate w/orange candy bar that I seriously considered buying. The kids were disappointed that Iwouldn’t share the strawberries, but this time I wanted them just for me.)
9:30 pm Homemade Veggie Pizza (whole wheat, high fiber pizza dough, topped with 2 carrots, 1 medium zucchini, a 3/4 cup broccoli florets, and two or three handfuls of spinach, plus a few handfuls of cheese.)
10 pm – midnight 5 Twizzlers, 4 handfuls of Ruffles potato chips, 3/4 cup light sour cream, a pinch of onion soup mix, and a couple handfuls of M&Ms. (obviously I didn’t do so well here…)
2:30 am Banana
The Verdict for the Day
Well… I did really well making good choices up til movie night and then I regressed into the whole potato chip, dip, and candy thing. Normally I would fight this off by just not having it in the house, but we did have it in the house, and well… not so good. But there is a success there too, I didn’t eat the whole bag of twizzlers or chips myself. (yes, I’m grasping for straws here…)
In looking back at what I ate and when, I think maybe one of the problems is that I didn’t eat anything from 1 to 9:30, that’s 8 1/2 hours with no food, just diet soda, water, and sparkling water. That is too long. I need to eat something small every few hours. I think I would have been better off doing that, then having all this food after 9:30. Something to work on, I guess.
Anyway, Overall this challenge has been good for me. I’ve been more aware of when I’m eating and by logging my food and exercise I’ve been able to be more aware of all the choices I’m making. Just for kicks I’d like to do a nutrition analysis on some of these days, but just haven’t made the time. Would love to know the calorie, fat, & fiber contents for each day.

That is one thing I’m proud of myself for is not taking home any leftovers. Mom sure did want to send a ton with us but I said we were not going to take anything home so send it all with other family. And that’s just what she did. We will have another Thanksgiving/Christmas meal in a few weeks and will leave the food there as well.
As for keeping a food journal, I am leaning towards starting mine up again but I did get so frustrated keeping up with everything. I think it’s about time to journal what I eat and use pictures too. We’ll see what 2010 brings!
